3-hour climb up to what is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking sunrises you will ever see. The mountain is called by many names, of which the most popular are ‘Sri Pada’, ‘Summanalla Kanda’ (butterfly mountain), and Adam’s Peak. The latter is the commonly used one, and at the summit of the mountain is a temple, one that draws people from all over the world.
The mountains many names stem from the boulder at the peak with a footprint impressed onto it. The Buddhists refer to it as Sri Pada and believe that the prints belong to Lord Buddha who left them there on one of his visits to Sri Lanka. Christians believe that the footprints belong to the disciple St. Thomas who was responsible for spreading Christianity in the Asian region. There is an Islamic belief that it is the place where the first man, Adam, landed on earth after he was expelled by God from the Garden of Eden. And the Hindus believe that footprints belong to Lord Vishnu.
